When drizzle came down at Lord's, Alesha Dixon put away her microphone and the opening ceremony was cancelled, the doom mongers who predicted the tournament would fail to catch the public imagination were sharpening their pencils.

The practice games are now over, now it is a three test series against the World Champions South Africa. If that doesn't make you bite your nails with glee, then next Saturday certainly will do. Ian McGeechan, the Lions coach is keeping his cards close to his chest, although you could predict that numerous positions have already been pencilled in, and, injuries pending, should remains so.
